Painting the 1978, 1979, 1980 Ski-Doo Chassis Grey

 

 

If you look close at your original finish, you will see that it has a "speckled" look.  I am guessing that this was a powdercoat with multiple colors in it originally.

So, how do we duplicate this?

Vintage Paint to the rescue!

Please note, I also have a standard grey that I developed that does not require the below procedure if you do not feel up to it.  I call that version "Approximate Match"

 

  1. Prep tunnel as normal.

  2. Spray the "ground coat" or light grey to coverage

  3. With the last coat still WET, Apply a custom coat of the "Mid Coat"

  4. Apply midcoat at a MUCH reduced pressure, (I was at about 8-10 pounds with my gun, but your gun will vary) reduced material setting on your gun needle, and NO REDUCER added to the paint.  I recommend doing some test panels.  You want the gun to be "spitting" droplets of paint onto the grey which will land as "speckles".  You will want to move your gun distance back, and have a fairly fast gun speed.  You want the ground coat grey to be wet, so that this midcoat melts in to the first color for the proper effect and so that you don't make it rough.  Please practice your technique.  Please note, more of the midcoat will darken the color, less will lighten the color.

  7. Actually you should be a little darker as I darkened the ground coat just a bit from this test panel.
